Audio/music control widget on lock screen won't go away until app is closed completely

The lock screen play/pause/fast forward/rewind controls widget which appears on the iPhone lock screen when playing audio does not go away when the audio is paused and the app is closed into a dormant state like it used to with the last version of iOS 12, I am currently running iOS 12.2 and this problem has only come about since the update.

Closing the audio app (Spotify, Podcasts etc) completely by swiping up does remove the audio controls from the lock screen, however I do not want to be closing apps which I use frequently just to get rid of the audio controls on the lock screen.

Is this a bug in the latest update or is this a permanent change? If it is a permanent change, can this feature be turned 'off' so that closing the audio app into a dormant state removes the lock screen audio controls as before?

Currently using iPhone XR with iOS 12.2

The widget seems to get "confused" when it has connected to my Apple TV, and then I go back to either Overcast or Music. The widget then just gives a generic Music control, where the Play button has no actual control over what's playing, and no artist/song info available.

Using XS and 12.2.

Apple - you should fix this, because it's really annoying.
