How to auto set cursor to search bar on safari

I came to have this problem on safari where everytime I opened a new tab, my cursor wouldn't auto select the search bar and I'd immediately start typing only to realize nothing was coming up because I had to click tab or manually go to the search bar with my mouse. I went looking for answers and was initially unsuccessful.

I've recently discovered though, that the reason for this, is that if on your Safari settings (to get there, press command and comma or go to Safari on the menu bar > Preferences), under the search tab, if you have the new tab set to either 'home page' or 'same page' it won't automatically select the search bar when opening a new tab. I changed this and found that it works. I hope this helps anyone who is having the same problem.
