I have an iPhone 10 and a Watch version 4. I have been missing a lot of text messages because when paired with the watch and the iphone is locked the text tone does not sound. The last response I saw on this subject was two years ago. Is there a solution to this that I have not found? I don't want to leave my iPhone unlock and it is annoying to have to unlock the watch everytime you want to use it.

In the Watch app on your iPhone, My Watch, Passcode, enable Wrist Detection. That should leave your watch unlocked while it is on your wrist (there is no need to lock it while you are wearing it). You could also enable Unlock With iPhone to avoid having to enter the passcode if your phone is unlocked. Finally go to General, Wake Screen and enable Wake Screen on Wrist Raise. Those steps should make regular use much more convenient.

The first paragraph gives you one option. The second points you at a different route which might help you. I provide the options, you have to test and decide which works best for you.
Did you read and test with options in the doc I linked? I think not because I can force iMessage notifications to my iPhone instead of the watch, simply by setting the relevant notifications to Off for the watch. It appears my messages are working exactly as you say you want.
Barbra, thanks for the response. It is very thorough, but I want to hear the alerts coming from my iPhone. It is loud enough to get my attention. Any other thoughts or am I misunderstanding your post?
