airport connected disk icon shows up as question mark in finder

I have a 4TB drive connected to my Airport base station via usb. The icon for this disk shows up like this on the desktop:

On the finder (and in the finder sidebar) it shows up like this:

The Get Info option is greyed out if I try to access it from the finder. If I try to get Info using Command-I while selecting the desktop icon, I get the Info window.

The disk does not show up when opening Disk Utility.

I'm curious about what's going on. Any ideas?

No, once I went back to Columns, same issue.

Starting up in Safe Mode & then restarting did the trick.

Boot into Safe Mode and check the Finder icon from there. Reboot normally and check again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.

In the finder, double click on the 4 TB icon, that will mount it on your Mac then a Finder Get info will work once you find the different icon..

Ah, so toggling back to Columns doesn't help either?

How about if you Force Quit the Finder, does Columns work then?

Finder can be persnickety about updating.

Thanks for the response BDAqua, unfortunately, it doesn't quite solve the problem. Double clicking mounts the volume, & I can access the files ok, but the icon still remains a ? & the Get Info is still greyed out.

Hmmm, even if you toggle the view to list?

Is there a different icon in the Desktop?

Ok, that did it!

Now, the million dollar question: Why?? Maybe it's just the mysterious electronic pixies doing their thing, but it would be nice to make sense of it...

Hi,

That's interesting.... Toggling the view to List gives me a good icon at the top & bottom of the finder window, and the ? in the sidebar. However, Get Info shows up in this view, as well as every other view than Columns. Not sure what to make of that...
