My iPhone 8 plus has the issue that when the phone is locked but the screen is on, for example when changing songs or responding to a text, it won't turn off automatically.

Ok last thing. Go to settings > general > reset all Settings. Then good to go. Failing that it your local Apple store for them to examine

Reboot your iPhone. Then see what happens
