I need to install an older version of the Mac OS on a partition of my hard drive. My copy of FileMaker Pro stopped working when I did my last upgrade of Mac OS. If I could boot up with El Capitan my copy of FileMaker would work again.

You can make a bootable USB stick to install using these free programs which will do all the work for you. Then boot off the USB stick by restarting with the option/alt key held down and selecting the USB stick. See if that will allow you to install it on the new partition.

Backup, backup, backup is the first step.
Applications-> Utilities-> Disk Utility and add a partition.
Now use the El Capitan installer and select the new partition.
Once done you can boot holding the Option key to select which partition to boot.
I downloaded the El Capitan installer but the system tries to install on my present boot drive and tells me that there is a newer version. It does not give me an option of choosing where to install it.
As long as your Mac is capable of booting El Capitan, then you can partition your drive and have as many bootable partitions as you like.
I know it is possible but I do not know how to do it.
