Virtual Machine(VM) is Using All 32GB of Mac’s RAM?

Virtual Machine(VM) Itself Tells me it is Using Almost All my Mac’s RAM!!!

As shown below, I received an error message stating that my VM is currently using too much memory, basically recommending to put aside what was being performed.

What I was doing was installing 172 updates along with 7 optional updates. This is a completely-new VM: one of Windows 7 Professional.

To suspend this, I have shut down the VM; closed VMWare Fusion; have close VMWare Fusion; and have now completely shut down my Mac for the time being.

The message was within the VM itself, being a window of Microsoft’s OS GUI. The message therefore was non-maneuverable out side of it.

Was the RAM message referring to only the RAM assigned to the VM? Or was the message referring to the Mac’s total 32GB RAM? There is 32GB of RAM in my Mac, and the VM is only 60GB in size (My Mac has 1TB in SSD storage capacity).

How much RAM would be being used by a 60GB size VM? Almost all 32GB of the Mac?

No suggestion is provided, as to what determines who’s RAM was being used: the VM or the Mac’s

It all operates now as it should. It was taking 2 hours to install all those updates, and all but 17 of the 172 were installed prior to the OP. With the processors now reset to 16GB, it should be a bit lower in momentum... letting the Mac handle all else on its own intent (32GB). I had to install lots later on, having let my Mac be for a few hours. Turns out, with my other software I installed onto it, over 230 updates came about, which resulted lots of restarts of the VM.

So, lots took place to get this all this complete: that's for certain.

The VM shares RAM with the system, therefore your answer the VM has been given access to all 32 GB of RAM

You do not say what exact Mac /model /year /size /retina /touchbar is this ? However 32 GB RAM is the 2018 15"MBP

Quit the Windows if necessary an open the Fusion>Preferences and make changes.

The kb states the resolution —This is a display artifact only and has no negative performance impact on the virtual machine or the host it is running on.

To work around this issue, disable the Virtual machine memory usage alarm to avoid false positives.

To disable the alarm definition:

  1. Select the vCenter object in the navigation pane of the vSphere Web Client.
  2. Click the Monitor tab > Issues sub-tab.
  3. Select Alarm Definitions and search for Virtual machine memory usage.
  4. Highlight the alarm and click Edit.
  5. Deselect Enable this alarm.
  6. Click Finish.

The size of the virtual machine's container drive has nothing to do with RAM size. I ran Windows 7 Professional with Fusion on an 8GB MBP (with a 60GB container drive) so something odd is going on. Knowing that your computer has 32GB of RAM and that you've posted in the MBPro community, like leroydouglas I'm assuming you have a 2018 15" MBPro which has a discrete video card. The only thing I can think of is way he suggested, quit the machine and then look at your Fusion preferences. I think you can reduce video memory in a Fusion machine. I think you can also force it to use the integrated graphics. (I switched from Fusion to Parallels two years ago so I'm a little fuzzy.) Look at any setting that looks like it would reduce the amount of RAM required by the machine. And frankly, don't discount the possibility of a borked Win update.
