The PowerBook5.6 and PowerBook5.7 (the A1106/A1107) G4 near-last
PowerBook 15-in/17-inch build models should have no trouble if the
old rotational hard drives are still OK. For the effort involved one may
simply get a new SSD (OWC Mercury Legacy Pro) & see if their video
instructions page (owc site) covers the sequential activity properly.
But you would need to get and use a retail Mac OS X Leopard 10.5
install DVD for the correct installation to work in these machines.
Best too if replacing the hard drive even with a used one, as Disk Tools
and utilities are on these DVD installation discs. (original two disc set
included the factory set of applications, also.)
And the kit which includes an enclosure may be OK. However to boot
from an external hard drive, the enclosure should have its own power
adapter (not bus powered USB) and have "Oxford-type" chipset. OWC
has newer versions of these type of enclosures, that do not say 'oxford.'
Sometimes you may find a new quality brand 7200-RPM 2.5-inch HDD
with sufficient storage capacity to provide work space for Mac OS X &
also Virtual Memory (temp swap file read-writes to HDD: fake RAM.)

If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the i
nstaller part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
MB427Z/A Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD. MB576Z/A Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD.
MB021Z/A Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user) MB022Z/A Leopard 10.5.6
install DVD (5-user family pack)

The IDE/ATA hard drive can be replaced by SSD such one in reference.
Other brands may require a secondary adapter; but there's no room.
