bmw idrive and ios 12.2

after ios 12.2 iPhone update BMW iDrive (2013) crashes and reboots when connected by USB/lightning. BMW's last update to their software was in 2014, they have confirmed to me that they are not planning any additional updates. My car is an BMW 335 xdrive F30 made in 2013. It has always been problematic with the iPhone since about iPhone 5 whatever ios version that was. However, after ios12.2 it's much worse in that it consistently crashes my entire idrive system (radio, naviagion, phone, everything and all buttons are nonresponsive even the display screen) and causes it to reboot after about 3 or 4 minutes. Oddly enough this will always happen if I use the iDrive controller to select search and chose songs, that always freezes and causes the crash. Other times it's just random. I've had apple check my phone for defects and nothing was a problem. I have a XS. My wife just got a new XS less than 2 weeks old and it has the same issue.

Since BMW has abandoned any support/updates for my 2013 car, i'm left hoping that this is a software issue with apple's 12.2 ios. The BMW dealership ran a full diagnostic on my car and everything checks out fine. I've opened a support case with Apple even fully resetting my phone as new, problem persists.

Not only is this annoying but it is a major safety concern as this causes my entire iDrive system to crash while i'm driving, losing all functionality of the entire iDrive system. I can see this causing accidents and being a huge liability for either apple or bmw or both. I don't know how else to report this problem so someone at apple will resolve this. As I mentioned, this only started happening two weeks ago after I upgraded the IOS to 12.2. Since this is happening not only on my XS but also my wife's new XS I am convinced the issue is with the iPhone software in 12.2.

Is anyone else experiencing this? If so any resolutions?

Thank you,

iPhone XS

Unfortunately no solution. I finally got BMW to admit they know their system that is in both our cars is no longer working with apple’s iOS and that they have no plans what do ever to provide a software update to fix the problem. At this point all you can do is file a complaint. Maybe if enough people take the time to do so BMW will change their attitude on this issue. It’s a shame a luxury car brand would abandoned its customers like this but there you have it. Believe me I spent countless hours with the dealership since 2014 trying to figure out the issues which have only gotten worse.

I also tested it on my wife's ipad pro 9.7 also running 12.2 through the usb/lightining cable (tried different cables to make sure it wasn't a bad cable issue) and the same thing happens. I also used an old ipod with a old 10pin or whatever connector and the ipod worked flawlessly in the bmw so again, I am almost certain this is an issue caused by something to do with ios 12.2
