iTunes error message: api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing

this error message comes up, but the file is NOT missing. What do I have to do to run iTunes (Windows 7 64-bit)?

Windows, Windows 6

Missing api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-0.dll or api-ms-win-crt-heap-l1-1-0.dll errors

Try installing the Update for Universal C Runtime in Windows, then try installing iTunes again.

When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Is Windows 7 updated to SP1? All other available updates?

Perhaps you need to install another precursor first, i.e the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update. There are three files to choose from so you need to select the one that matches the processor architecture of your system, which should be noted in the error message.

  • vcredist_x86.EXE - 32-bit systems
  • vcredist_IA64.EXE - Itanium processors
  • vcredist_x64.EXE - other 64-bit systems

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment. Links to the most recent builds are now at the bottom of the page.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I followed the instructions, and got the same error message when tried to run iTunes. The only step that caused any delay was when the system was installing Apple Mobile Device support, it told me to verify I had sufficient privileges to do that. I retried it, and got the same advice, so I told the system to ignore it. The installation completed, I clicked to run iTunes, and got the same message about the missing dll file.
