how to edit an m4a file in garageband

I have an m4a voice recording that needs some clipping adjusted. I've dragged it into an empty new project in GarageBand, but can't figure out how to get to the editing tools. Is there another way to open the file so I can edit it? I am completely new to this. Thanks.

Hello goldwolf01,

Thank you for visiting the Apple Support Communities. I understand that you’re trying to edit an M4A file in Garageband. I’d like to provide information that may help with this.

An M4A file format is not a supported audio file format for Garageband, which may be why you are unable to see any edit options. Please review GarageBand for Mac: Import audio and MIDI files for supported file formats.

You may want to see if you can convert this particular file to a supported format using iTunes: Convert a song to a different file format with iTunes - Apple Support. If this step does not help convert the file, you may need to use a third-party product to help with converting the file.

Cheers!

Welcome back goldwolf01,

We were happy to help provide you this additional guidance for your question. To answer your follow up question, when you drag the audio file to tracks, or to the empty area below the existing tracks, you are essentially either adding it to your existing project or adding it to a track list for later use in projects.

Check out this awesome support page for GarageBand, too: GarageBand - Official Apple Support. You'll find helpful guides and resources on using GarageBand. You can even use the Contact Apple Support link near the bottom of the support page we linked above, should you find yourself needing more immediate assistance using this app.

Take care!
