Hyperlinks in Word document do not open.
I have created Word document (2011) and inserted hyperlinks but these hyperlinks do not open when clicked. I rather get messages such as proxy or server not found. Any advice.
MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.13

Microsoft never tested Office 2011 for Mac on High Sierra. They ended support for this particular Office suite in Oct 2017, less than a month after High Sierra was released. The last update for Office 2011 for Mac was 14.7.7 in Sept 2017.
Microsoft only supports the following on Sierra, High Sierra, and Mojave.
Microsoft is adopting Apple's three-year sliding window of operating system support. Once macOS 10.15 arrives this Fall, support for Sierra (10.12) will end.
Microsoft has indicated that they will discontinue Office 2016 for Mac in Oct 2020, so it is not a strategic single-purchase option, though an Office365 subscription should ease the version transition to Office 2019 for Mac.

Yes— update your software
Thanks for the advice. I have installed Office 2016 and uninstalled Office 201. However, Word, which I use the most, does not load immediately but takes time. Any Word document also takes quite unusual time to open. Sometimes it asks for permission to get access to custom directory 2011. Any troubleshooting?
Thanks once again for taking your time.
EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.
It's in the hidden User's Library.
Apple hid the Users' Library folders...
Method 1:
1 From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.
2 In the window that opens, enter ~/Library, and click Go.
Method 2:
1 Go to the Finder (or desktop).
2 Hold the Option key on your keyboard, and click the Go menu at the top of the screen.
3 With the Go menu open, you'll notice that pressing and releasing Option will display or hide the Library choice in this menu.
4 Select Library from the Go menu (while holding down Option) to access the hidden folder.
Thanks for the advice. I am using macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6 software. However, no update is available as yet. What else would you please suggest?
Thanks for the advice. I have run the EtreCheck and its report is attached for further guidance.
Thanks for the advice.
No such file exists in Library.
Thanks once again for your time.

Create or edit a hyperlink in Office for Mac - Office Support
Ensure that you have run Microsoft AutoUpdate until you are at Word 16.24 (if Office365). You don't state the year of your MacBook Pro, or if you are running any anti-virus, or so-called Mac "cleaner" software on it. These will just kill your application performance, as would an internal rotational drive, and too little RAM for what you are attempting to use concurrently.
If your slow down is immediately after boot, you are competing with several Mac house-keeping activities such as Spotlight indexing, software update, iCloud synchronizations, etc. After a few minutes, this "noise" fades away, and you can launch applications faster.
The recommendation of EtreCheck is sound and will avoid a lot of guess work about what is happening to cause that slowdown with Word. Use the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.
As for that original question about inactive links in Word documents, you may need to use the command-click on the hyperlink to make it work from within Word.
If You plan on keepong ot consider 16 GBH of RAM...
