How do I update my iPhone from the setup process

The iPhone is in the setup screen when I turn it on, however, when I get past the choose WiFi network it asks for an update before it can be setup, the same happens when I try to setup with my other iPhone nearby process. When I connect it to my computer the iTunes screen is just blank with the iPhone text in the middle and asks for a SIM card to be inserted.

The iPhone also doesn't recieve any reception even with the SIM card inside it.

Is there a way to update the iPhone?

Restart the iPhone in Recovery mode and then connect to iTunes. It will detect it and also allow you to restore it. When prompted, select Restore as New and iTunes will download the latest firmware compatible with your device.

Note: You iPhone will exit the recovery mode in few minutes. So once the download is completed, restart iPhone again in recovery and connect it with iTunes.
