Want to return a stolen iPad

I unknowingly purchased a stolen iPad from a second hand source. It is activation locked and I am unable to use it. I had the police run the serial number and it has not been reported as lost or stolen. Is there any way to return it to its original owner?

It's impossible to find the previous owner, and in this situation you won't be able to get into the iPad. It isn't necessarily stolen (though it might be) - we see a lot of cases where the vendor has failed to clear the device or has forgotten his details (or says he has).

If you can take it back to where you bought it from you could try demanding a refund on the grounds that it doesn't work, though the chances of that are probably slim. If the police don't want to know about it there's not much you can do except find a way of recycling it.
