Trouble pairing my AirPods with Samsung phone

Just got airpods (v1) and am excited to use them, but getting pairing errors.

I can see the airpods on my Samsung (but it's listed as an unnamed device), can see the connection request on both the Samsung and my macbook pro, I accept on the mac and on the phone, but then I get:

"Couldn't pair with [device name] Check your [device name] settings and try again."

Help! I've tried restarting the phone, changing the settings on the airpods to the most simple features (no tapping), etc. No dice.

It's not clear what the MacBook has to do with it. You can pair the AirPods with the Mac, OR with the Samsung, but not both at the same time. You can also first set up one and get it working, then the other. See this Apple support link-->Set up AirPods with your Mac and other Bluetooth devices - Apple Support
