Preview is not responding

I use my MacBook Air mainly for school activities so I print things off using the preview application which is the default thing to use. Recently, I tried using preview so I could print off a paper for school but it froze and I wasn't able to use it. Ever since that day I can no longer use preview, whenever I click on it, a clear square appears in the middle of my screen and sometimes a black square too. Preview is now unresponsive and it doesn't work anymore. Now to print things I use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC but I much prefer using Preview and I'd like to know if there is anything I can do to fix it.
