Printer drivers are supplied to Apple by the printer manufacturers. Apple does not produce these drivers.
Printer manufacturers tend to produce drivers for a few years based on many factors. When they stop, that is your signal to get ready to buy a new printer.
I have a perfectly good little HP Laserjet printer and many toner cartridges that I can no longer use. I intend to put them on Craigs list or my local garage sale in order to move it as HP long ago quit supporting it.
Best thing to do is go to Canon web site and download their printer drivers first then use printer pane found within system preferences to add your printer.
Have you tried GutenPrint with your HP?
Also for fagiles: if everything else fails give GutenPrint a try.
Yes, the issue is we use it as a network printer and it was never designed to be one so it does not have an ip address. Also, we replaced the thing and it's just sitting going unused.
