I want to download the update for pages

According to the information in your post above, you are using 'some' version of Pages (which version, you have not specified), on a MBPro running OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).

You can find your current Pages version in About Pages, the first item in the Pages menu.

You can find the current OS version on your MBPro in the first item under the Apple menu, About this Mac..

If the OS information above is correct, is correct, that explains why you cannot download the update. The Mac App store carries only the most recent version of Pages—currently 8.n.

Pages 8 requires macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or macOS 10.14 (Mojave). To download, install and run Pages 8, you will first need to update your Mac's OS to Mojave.

What is your current version of Pages? (Pages Menu > About Pages).

What method(s) have you tried to upload (or insert) PDFs into Pages?

Others have explained why you presently cannot update Pages. You cannot open PDF documents in Pages, as it is not a PDF viewer. You could do that in Apple's Preview application. You can drag and drop a single-page PDF onto an open Pages document where it will become a scaleable document object.
