iTunes search has been broken for a while. What's the secret?

iTunes Version 12.9.4.94, macOS 10.14.4 (18E226)

It seems iTunes has a bug requiring you to put the song title first and then ONE and only one word from the artist's name if you want to zero in on your search. Is this true?

To set the stage: I want to hear Juicy, by Doja Cat. The song is in my library, and I'm an Apple Music subscriber. For what it's worth: I added it from Apple Music.

Using my local library as the source:

If I search for [Juicy], I find that track plus another famous "Juicy": the one by Notorious B.I.G.

If I search for [Doja Cat], I get everything in my library from Doja Cat. Juicy is in there, sure, but so is everything else that I have by Doja Cat.

Finally: searching for [Juicy Doja Cat] returns nothing, until I began writing this post and discovering the flaws. As I tried different ways of searching, I noticed that [Juicy Doja] works, but [Juicy Doja Cat] does not.

After a little more investigation, it seems [song title + any one word from artist's name] works (in that order) but if you reverse the order and go [any one word from artist's name + song title] it's no joy.

Another example is the song [Everyday] by [Logic]. If you search for [everyday logic] you'll find it, but search for [logic everyday] and it's not found.

Is it just me, or is this how it is for you? If not, I'd love to figure out how to fix this broken experience.

Same result, though I was never browsing the iTunes Store, which is separate and distinct from Apple Music. The former being a place you can buy music outright; the latter being a subscription service--we both know this, but mentioning here for posterity so we don't get confused.

Any time I'm searching my library for a song, I'm typically on the Library tab... but I'm very clear that I'm searching for music in my library while in the Library tab at the top, and not searching using the Store tab.

The more I play around with search behavior, the more I think that the functionality is terribly flawed. For example, if the song title has more than one word and the artist name has more than one word, searching for more than one word of each will return no results. Take "Go to town" by "Doja Cat" -- if I search [town cat] I can find it. However, [doja town] returns nothing. There are more ways to return zero search results than there are ways to find the song I'm looking for; you think it'd be the opposite.

Behavior like this isn't always the case, though. Take Bonita Applebum by A Tribe Called Quest, off their album, The Anthology. [bonita tribe] works but [tribe bonita] does not. So if you get things in the wrong order and/or you use more than one word for a song or artist, you may end up with zero results. Very confusing, and I think a major bug.

Hmm, well that's iTunes for Windows, and this forum is for discussing the Mac version, which doesn't have that filtering option. Even still, filter by "All" should still produce results. It seems like the Mac implementation of search just searches everything in the library. I've filed a bug with Apple.

EDIT: Figured out how to see what you're seeing; when I clicked the magnifying glass the first few times, nothing happened for whatever reason. Now, it's coming up after restarting iTunes.

When we untick the Search Entire Library, the results presentation changes to the old-school way where all results are displayed in the main iTunes window instead of the search pop-over, which I much prefer since my use case is usually to search for and play a song immediately.

Whatever the case, search works properly when we do this... so that is indeed a workaround for a broken feature. Nice one! Hopefully Apple fixes the Search Entire Library implementation.
