Iphone X head phones with adaptor won't work with call

Iphone X head phones with adaptor won't work with a phone call, but will work with music. The adaptor and the headphones are not Apple products.

I don't want to use bluetooth headphones so I purchased an adapter so I can use headphones with a 3.5 mm plug. wired headphone with iphone XS Max I needed to use a wired headphone; so I purchased a lightning to 3.5mm connector and plugged it in. The audio on various music apps/audio books etc. work fine. However the phone does not work (with the wired headset - it works fine in bluetooth mode). Any idea what I need to do.

Nevermind. I purchased a adaptor that allows charging while using headphones and I just saw that the description says no call function. :(
