printer driver for OS 10.14.4 and HP Laser Jet M402d

Since the last incremental OS update within Mojave a week or two ago, any documents (Word, PDF, web pages) are printing out low-res, pixellated, and almost illegible. The fact that it's happening in several apps makes me think it's a driver issue. Correct? Where to find driver update that works? HP doesn't seem to have it. Suggestions?

I recommend that you visit the HP LaserJet M402d driver page, and download/install HP Easy Start and the 2019 firmware update. Once you have installed and run HP Easy Start, don't forget to reset the print system.

I would also suggest “Reset the Printing System” as mentioned in both the above replies and then simply re-add the printer back, I’ve copied the relevant section below.

The reason for trying that first is because I don’t believe the last point update in itself changed anything on the printing front, so it may just have been the process of updating that’s caused the problem and therefore the existing drivers are still ok.

You can always try installing the drivers later if that doesn’t work but I’ve usually found removing and re-adding the printer resolves issues of this nature, a bit like deleting and re-adding Mail accounts.

Hello, MalamuteMama.

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities about this. From what I'm reading and understand is that your printer is no longer printing legible documents.

With your printer you shouldn't need any drivers according to HP: HP LaserJet, HP PageWide - Printers compatible with macOS Mojave 10.14

"The printers listed below can automatically use AirPrint, the default print path, when the printer and the Mac are connected to the same local network". Which HP Laser Jet Pro m402d falls in that list.

I would suggest using some of the steps in this article which can help resolve printing issues: If you can't print from your Mac or iOS device

Try the two steps at the bottom which reset the printer and remove the printer.

Let me know how this goes.

Cheers!
