Dual Screen Dimwit

late 2012 iMac set up with additional monitor - running Mojave 10.14.4

Aware of being a total dimwit here, but really struggling to get the set up running as I want it, AND to be consistent.

Could anyone help me understand how I set up to have (and retain as consistent) specific apps to open on one screen and not the other. It was working fine - a stroke of luck more than anything - but now, app opening seems to prefer the 'wrong' screen.

Very sure there's a simple answer. Could anyone help before I crawl back into my hole ?

Many thanks

if you want to use one display as the main for the dock and upper file menu then go to mission control and uncheck "displays have separate spaces." The log out and log back in. If you are looking to launch a particular program and to be shown ie launched on a particular display then don't expect things to function perfectly because some programs will and other not.
