iTunes backup not enough storage

I'm trying to create a local backup of my iPad. My iPad in General / iPad Storage says it's using 61.7GB. iTunes reports it a bit differently - saying there's 189.94GB free out of 256GB - or about 66GB used. My Mac says I have 161.67GB available - should be plenty. But when I try to connect my iPad, fire up iTunes, go to Summary, choose Backups / This Computer, and click Back Up Now, it runs for a few seconds and then displays an error message.

Note that I recently (within the last hour) changed Photos on my iPad to "Optimize iPad Storage", so maybe it's not done offloading the originals - though they should all be in iCloud. The storage readings seem to indicate that the photos are gone - just thumbnails left on my iPad. Maybe it's just a matter of waiting and trying later?

Turns out there were one or more corrupted files on my iPad. iTunes would start the backup, run for a couple of minutes, then die with the "not enough space" message. In fact, it was running into one or more files that were reporting an incorrectly high size. Ended up depending on iCloud backup, then did a restore of the system from iTunes, followed by a restore from iCloud. All is well now.

I was wanting the backup to my local computer because it has been my experience in the past that iCloud backup does not save all app data. That appears to be not true anymore. A backup to iCloud is just as good as one to local storage via iTunes.

What clued me in: I installed the iExplore app to see if I could figure out what was wrong. iExplore was telling me that the iPad was using something like 200+GB of the available 256. iTunes thought only 80GB was used. Even after I made more than 256GB of free space available on my Mac, it still failed.

Try booting into the Safe Mode to clear caches. Then reboot normally.
