Safari search tab not working upon start up

When I open safari and try to use the search tab provided, I get no suggested links and hitting the return key does nothing. Safari still works and websites still load if I open them via a link or finding them with my history.


Additionally, this problem usually only occurs on start up, if the computer was asleep or shut down for awhile and will persist for a good ten minutes or so; if I had Safari open for awhile, this problem usually will not occur.


Any suggested fixes for this peculiar problem?

Originally all were checked aside from "Include search engine suggestions", checking that seemed to resolve the issue of having no suggestions in the search tab; however, upon start up I still have the issue of the search tab failing to do anything after I hit return.


My return key itself is working properly, and I can still search normally if I use another search bar such as the one on google's homepage, it just is safari's main search bar that continues to refuse to work upon start up for a few minutes.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.


Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Quit/reopen Safari and test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.
