All notes on icloud.com disappeared

All notes on icloud.com disappeared

Yesterday (Saturday 11 May 2019) I discovered that all my notes, organised in folders, on my icloud.com mail account disappeared, although I had access to all a few hours before.

Questions:

Why did it happen?
How can I restore my notes back on my iCloud.com mail account?

P.S. FYI, I reinstalled the latest OSX High Sierra from scratch — after erasing my Macintosh HD — one week ago (Saturday 4 May 2019). A few days later I moved all notes "On my Mac" to "iCloud". Now they are all gone???!!!

I tried to restore the folder in the Time Machine backup, but this did not work.

I then restored the following folder in the Time Machine backup, after deselecting Notes from iCloud (to stop synching):

~/Library/Group Containers

and then I restored the folder group.com.apple.notes.

This did the job.

Have you checked the Notes application and at iCloud.com/Notes using a computer browser for a Recently Deleted folder?

If you have a Time Machine backup, go to a backup where you had the notes and paste the below into the search bar. Restore that file. Restart the computer.

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes/
