Import movie from Mac HD to iPhone

I have a movie in *.mp4 format on my Mac HD. How do I import it into iTunes so I can copy to my iPhone and iPad?

iPhone 6s, iOS 12

I just tend to drag the file over the iTunes window, but you can follow this.

Obviously the file needs to be compatible (not all mp4’s are) with iTunes and the device you intend to sync it to. This may be useful if the file is not.

If you want to bypass iTunes you can connect the iDevice and then drag the file over the iDevice in the sidebar, if your settings allow it should import directly to the iDevice (think it’s still possible but haven’t used that in a while because tend not to use iTunes for anything but music).
