Why can I no longer drag-and-drop files from a CD into iTunes on my Mac?

I have always dragged files from CDs into playlists that I have set up in iTunes on my iMac. Recently it just stopped working. When I start dragging, instead of seeing a little green square with a plus sign, I see the "not allowed" symbol (circle with a slash). I typically copy only selected tracks from a disc into a playlist that I have created and named in my iTunes Library, so the "Import CD" feature is useless.

I would be grateful for any help. My iTunes version is 12.9.4.94 (!) and I am running OS Mojave 10.14.4.

It is still working in iTunes 12.9.2.5. I just purchased 3 CDs this afternoon and was able to drag and drop all of them into iTunes. Here is how I do it: Create your playlist. Insert the CD. When the songs show up, select all of the tracks (or whichever one(s) you want to import). Then click/hold and drag to the left. The column with all of your playlists should open. Keep holding and move the mouse to the bottom of the column to start scrolling. When you get to the playlist, stop and release the mouse. It worked perfectly for me.

Thank you, Wakko. Unfortunately that no longer works in iTunes 12.9.4.94. The instructions that appear in the empty window of a new playlist clearly state, "To add to this playlist, drag items to the playlist in the sidebar." But it doesn't work. When I drag a set of tracks over the playlist name, the playlist name highlights, I drop, and nothing happens. I think Apple screwed up this feature in this latest version. Can I install an older version of iTunes, perhaps?

If you can find the installer for an older version, you could install it. However, I believe that the library may not work with a newer version (I could be wrong - iPhoto libraries won't work with older versions of the software - not certain if iTunes works the same way).

If you have a backup of your older library, then you would probably be okay. Hopefully someone will chime in who knows for sure.

That is not helpful in the least. Some of us prefer to drag the songs from a CD into iTunes, because we don't like the way that iTunes handles it on its own. Perhaps you could offer some things for the original poster to check. I have not ripped a CD into iTunes in a few months (haven't purchased any new music), so I don't know if it still works on my computer or not.

Hello tt2, thanks very much for your comments. Interesting that I should not be able to drag and drop files from a music CD directly into a playlist in iTunes. I have been doing exactly that for many years, creating hundreds of playlists using multiple versions of iTunes. I open the CD to view the tracks in the finder. In iTunes a create a playlist and then drag and drop the selected tracks from the finder into the empty right-hand panel in iTunes. It has always worked flawlessly until now. What changed? In any case, I will have to resort to the Import CD function which I find convoluted. With a very large iTunes library the scrolling becomes excessive. Such is life. Thanks again for your help.

You cannot drag and drop files to smart playlists or playlist folders. If you're having trouble adding files stored on your computer into the library try Repair security permissions for iTunes for Mac - Apple Community. If you're talking about dragging files from an optical disc in audio CD format directly to a playlist then I'm surprised that ever worked. I would typically insert the CD, select it in iTunes, uncheck the unwanted tracks, import, then add the recent imports to whatever regular playlists I want to add them to. As noted see Import songs from CDs into iTunes on Mac - Apple Support.
