Text predictions making touch bar controls disappear in Chrome

Somehow over an update my chrome suddenly started using text predictions and when it uses text predictions the main Chrome touch bar controls go away (new tab, search, etc). When I turn text predictions off the bar is just black except for esc and the main function keys. This deeply bothers me because I don't use text predictions and I want the chrome controls to be there 100% of the time.

Any way to fix this?

Do you see this same behavior in other browsers— to test?

To trouble shoot further you can:

Try a SafeBoot  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-10 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.
