Unable to use search feature to find notes

I have hundreds of notes but the search function does not locate certain notes even though they are there when I scroll down through the list of notes. I have changed the sort pattern (alphabetical, newest edit, newest created, etc.) a couple of times to see if that would fix the problem. The changes to any note does sync from the notes app on my iPhone to my iCloud account and the notes app on my MacBook Pro. I have the latest updates for the hardware and software. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My next step may be going to an Apple Store to see if a tech person can solve the problem.
