AirPods not commanding Audible on new iPhone XR

I just set up my new iPhone XR. My AirPods (generation 1) work fine with Apple music, the double-tap commands working as desired, but not with Audible. I can hear fine, but I can't get them to pause/play (left AirPod) or rewind (right AirPod) with double-taps the way they worked on my iPhone 6s plus. (Again, these commands work fine with music, just not with Audible.) I reset the AirPods (holding in the button on back of the charging case until the light turned white) and reconnected them as if they were new to the phone, but this didn't help with Audible. Any suggestions?

Did they ever work with Audible in the past? Did you check with the Audible developers to see if their app supports the latest iOS, if you updated?

It is possible the apps won't work, but only their support could answer that question. As far as the AirPods, you have found they work with the XR, but if it is a specific app, again only the app developer can answer that question.

They worked fine with my Apple 6S plus. I just tested them with Youtube on the XR and they paused the video, but then then next double-tap start music playing from my music library. So they don't seem to work with Youtube, either.

Again, is this the YouTube app? Did you just update your iPhone to the latest iOS? Have you updated any apps? I don't use either app, but I'm not aware of any changes. I can no longer test your issue, as I have the newer AirPods. Maybe someone else that has the older ones can chime in and try their device for you.

This is a brand new iPhone XR, as of today, which updated to the latest IOS software as it was starting up. I have also tested the AirPods and XR with Xfinity TV Streaming app and with TuneIn Radio and they seem to command those apps okay (Pause, play, rewind). I also deleted and re-installed Audible, and that didn't help. Is it possible that Audible has not been updated to work with AirPods on the XR or that the Gen 1 AirPods do not work with all apps on the XR?
