Photo book printing

I second Keith's recommendation. There's a 3rd party book provider which used to do the printing for Apple, Mimeo, that will take PDF files created by iPhoto and Photos and print and bind books and calendars. 

Also you can upload the PDF file to PrestoPhotos which also can print and bind books and calendars from iPhoto or Photos pdf files.  They've been doing it for some time now.

To send to friends, I once created a scrolling PDF file of a Photos app Motif photo book using the Preview app on the Mac. It's a bit laborious, and I am sure that there are better ways of doing it.

What I did was carefully take a screen shot of each page in the photo book. That placed a .png file of each screen shot on my desktop. I then opened each one in Preview and saved the .png file as a PDF. When they all were saved as PDFs, I opened one of them in the Preview app. Preview opened, displaying the photo. I then disabled Hide Side Bar and enabled Thumbnails and Continuous Scroll. I dragged the rest of the PDFs into the Preview sidebar. That displayed the PDFs as thumbnails in the Preview sidebar. I then exported them as a continuous scroll pdf to my desktop.

It turned out great. I didn't notice any difference in quality. If some of the photos export as rotated in the PDF, you can select them in the PDF sidebar and do a Tools/Rotate to correct it. As I said, however, there probably is some app out there that can save as a PDF with one click, like the former Apple Photo Books could in the Photos app.

Adding to what Keith Barkley said, it may be possible, depending on the third party app, to convert your old project to a new project in the third party app. I belief that the Motif app will allow that. Take a look at this help menu item:

There is one big problem with relying on the conversion, Rich. I would not risk it, if a book is ready to be printed. We need to upgrade to a system version that supports the third-party project extensions for converting the book. Upgrading to Mojave and the project extensions will kill the ability to create books with Apple's native print product tools. They are gone from Photos 4.0. And if the conversion makes a mess of our books or calendars, we are stuck. I tested with few book and calendar projects, but the converted project has not been any good. Perhaps it is better by now than a few months ago. In Photos 4.0 on Mojave is currently not a single project extension available that will allow us to create a book or calendar while working off-line. And to save a PDF for printing the product on our own printer. I am keeping iPhoto and Aperture for this, because Photos can no longer do it.

Presto Photo templates still can do this, but we cannot use it as an extension from Photos.

Thanks for the good info there. I was assuming that the third-party photo book app could competently make the conversion, but you have found that these third-party apps do not reliably convert. I do have a couple of old projects in an archived Photos library that I was thinking of converting. Now I won't do that.

How do I create a PDF file of the book?

It depends on what app and version you're using.

Hi Leonie, Since upgrading to Mojave and the product extensions my projects wont upload to Mimeo for printing. Are you aware of any workaround to combat this.
