Squarespace Email Campaigns page blank in any browser

Hi everyone,

I am a software developer who has been working with Squarespace to resolve an issue with their new Email Campaigns offering. However, we believe this may be controlled by something on macOS. This is a complex issue so please bare with me.

Task: Login to Squarespace, click Marketing, click Email Campaigns.

Expected result: Loads the Email Campaigns dashboard.

Actual result: Page goes blank.

Some notes:

1) This issue only occurs on my default local user. If I make a new user in macOS, it works as expected.

2) This issue originally only occurred in Safari 12.1 (14607.1.40.1.4). After a week, it now occurs in Chrome (74.0.3729.157) and Firefox (66.0.5).

3) I have tried clearing local dns cache, local browser cache, disabling startup items, disabling addons.

It's almost like there is some security, tracking, or safety setting on my default local user. Or something was cached on Chrome for a week that was refreshed on Safari.

Any insight?

I suspect that you have some third party app installed that claims to protect, clean, manage, etc. your computer. Or, you have a third party browser extension installed that is interfering with the page loading. Start up Safari while pressing and holding the shift key. This will launch Safari in a clean state. If this does not work start troubleshooting further.

Start up your computer in safe mode to start troubleshooting.

Hi Leroy, thanks for looking into this for me. Create a website and then you'll see the appropriate steps to arrive at Email Campaigns. I will note that this problem only exists on a specific local machine user and it exists on all browsers so I would be surprised if you can reproduce it easily.

This is a great question for SquareSpace Support—

https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/requests/new#choose-topic

It was already suggested above:

To trouble shoot further you can:

Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

A hot link to your problem page would be most useful.

https://www.squarespace.com/email-marketing I see no issues here using FireFox.

hard to trouble shoot with some exact reference to get to the code to your page.

I do do not see you path as you tried to describe—

Task: Login to Squarespace, click Marketing, click Email Campaigns. ??

I shift clicked Safari in my Dock and it started up. I navigated to my Squarespace website and my authentication state was still there (I was automatically logged in). Based on your description I was expecting my auth state to be lost if Safari was launching in a clean state. Can you please confirm? Anyway: problem persists.

I wondered about a third party browser extension but I turned off all extensions and this problem exists in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.

I do not use third-party protect/clean/manage apps on this computer.

This problem exists only on this local user. If I make a new user, the problem does not exist. For this reason I suspect that if any of you try to reproduce it on your end, you will not have any luck, unfortunately.

Thank you for your kindness.

Hi Leroy, thanks again for chiming in.

I have been in contact with Squarespace support for about 2 months now about this issue and I am now doing my due diligence on the macOS side of things.

The issue is isolated to a specific user which just happens to be my admin account on my local machine.

Maybe it is a non-issue if the only occurrence is your local admin account. Seem odd enough.

Safeboot clears all certain system caches. I guess you could go one step further from Terminal—

Flushes the entire cache.  This should only be used in extreme cases.  Validation information is used within the cache along with other techniques to ensure the OS has valid information available to it.

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

Down side is you are the one working out the issue for them or for you— I suspect what you are saying is it could happen out in the wild, with no clear resolve. You seemed to have covered the basics. I know it is this last 10% where you pull your hair out.

Sorry I can be no help,

but I am not going to create a Squarespace website to troubleshoot any further the interface or back end.

I would be curious to hear your final resolve.

Hi everyone, this issue was recently patched on Squarespace's end and the problem was not related to macOS. Thanks for the help.

Good computing lukepighetti ! Much like we suspected.
