Attempting to Recover Data From MacBook Pro 2013 using Envoy Pro Enclosure

So...my Macbook Pro early 2013 display died the other day. Of course, I really need the files from the hard drive (which was healthy).

I purchased an OWC Envoy Pro enclosure and inserted the drive from the 2013 MBP. So far, so good.

I don't know what to do now though. I attached the external drive to a 2008 Macbook Pro (through the USB 2.0 port) and I was hoping the 2013 external drive would just show up on the desktop of the 2008. It doesn't. I do see the "Envoy Pro" listed under Disk Utility, but the Mount option is greyed out. I also ran First Aid and not issues were found. If I click "Info" for the external drive it says "Unknown" for File System in the details window.

Any ideas on what to do next? Do I need to reformat the drive in some way?

P.S. I also attached the Envoy Pro drive to my 2018 Dell XPS. It does not show up on the desktop, but I do see it under listed in the Device Manager under Disk Drives.

But I don't know what to do next.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Rick

I'll guess this situation:

you are either running High Sierra or Mojave on that 2013. You connected it to a 2008 which is running something previous. If so there is no way that 2008 is going to mount, display or anything else on APFS volumes found under High Sierra or Mojave. You should not apply any previous disk Utility to that drive because of compatibility and you can screw your data for sure. Connect that external to a modern operating system and go save your data.

The last thing you want to do is format the drive if you are trying to recover your data on the drive. Formatting will erase all data.

You can buy a new PCIe SSD for your 2013 MBP. Install the macOS and go from there in an effort to recovery the bad drive. SSD Upgrade for MacBook Pro Retina Display 2013-2015 - OWC
