Re; RTProtectionDaemon

The "problem" persists with Malwarebytes full paid for version of their application with the RTProtection daemon sucking up most of the CPU, at least at startup. The solution remains the same as it was in 2017. Go to the Malwarebytes icon on the toolbar and click on Stop Malware Protection. This is different terminology to the older version but means the same.

In addition to that there is now an added feature called App Block. This will block the accidental installation of applications that may be initiated by clicking a link on a website.

This is good in a way but if you get a popup saying that the installation of a legitimate app that you want to instal has been blocked by Malwarebytes you may have to turn off (at least temporaliy) the new feature "App Block". This is done in the same way as with the above.

You May have hit the nail on the head there John. I had used the free version for years episodically as required or whenever I suspected I may have picked up malware. I eventually caved in and got the paid for full version. Unfortunately like many similar Maintainence apps these days they try to do too much and end up doing stuff we neither need now want. The “helper” app runs all the time and yes you can disable its preferences but do I need it at all? No. So I’ve uninstalled it, cancelled my renewal and now I’m using DetectX Swift which I run when I want or need to and when I’m not using it it’s off.

Using complimentary uninstallers for things that require installation procedures is certainly a prudent first step, but a lot of them are ineffective or simply don't work. It's one of many reasons I strictly prohibit the installation of such things on my Macs. Not only can they cause problems or exacerbate existing ones, they can be difficult (and in extreme cases, impossible) to remove when you no longer want them to affect your Mac. It's much better to avoid the need for them... and you never need them.
