e-sim doesn't work in Spain & France

I've been in Spain & France since 19/April. I had my US Verizon account set-up on the e-sim of my iPhone XS Max. I am using an Orange nano-sim in Spain/France. I couldn't figure out why my e-sim/Verizon account was dead - can't wifi call, no text. I finally found an Apple store in Bordeaux and learned that the e-sim does not work in France!!!! Sure would be nice if Apple communicated that "feature". Does the right hand not know what the left hand is doing???? Might be nice if Apple were to communicate to it's customers where the e-sim is working and where it is not rather than communicating that it is great for traveling outside your country of origin with the implied message it works everywhere. Thx Apple

Correct - there are no carriers in France currently supporting use of eSIM. You can see the list of supported carriers by country here - Find wireless carriers that offer eSIM service - Apple Support

Before you travel

  1. Can I use my device while traveling outside the US?
    1. Most smartphones and some tablets can be used when you travel abroad. You can use our Trip Planner to find out if your device will work for your trip.
  2. How do I get my device ready to use outside the US?
    1. Before you travel, make sure your device roaming settings are turned on:
      • iOS: Go to SettingsCellular, and turn on Voice and Data roaming
      • Android™: Steps vary. Some devices may automatically prompt you to allow global data when you arrive at your destination.

If I understand your response correctly, by turning on my cellular & roaming, I’m incurring Verizon’s $10/day plan. Since I’m gone 40 days I didn’t want to incur that cost, thus the nano-sim while here but use Verizon on a WiFi basis only. As I mentioned, Apple here in Bordeaux indicated the e-sim is not set-up/working in France

Thx Michael, but I guess that’s my point. If Apple is going to be transparent about the e-sim feature - which is an excellent feature & why I upgraded due to my heavy Europe travel this year- they should educate their re-sellers ( Verizon et al) & on-line support personnel. I’ve been wrestling w/this issue for 4 weeks & finally was told the reason by a French Apple employee. In reading any Apple promo material they do not qualify the e-sim feature but rather tout its feature for foreign travel

In the iPhone XS and XR tech specs, it mentions that not all carriers support eSIM. Apple publishes and updates the global supported carriers list I posted. I honestly don’t think it is up to Apple to educate anyone about any particular carrier they choose to use. There are thousands of carriers in hundreds of countries that one might chose to pay for service with. It is up those carriers to know what they do or do not support, and it is up to consumers to know what they are or are not paying for.

Apple doesn’t educate the carriers. The carriers need to educate their own personnel about the products they sell. If Verizon couldn’t help you with a question about travel, surely their own employers know how to look up the same information we’ve posted here?

I agree with you to a point. For many, including myself, who are not so tech savvy to understand how the e-sim works and the fact that each country has to be able to support it, it's hard to be able to even anticipate that as a question. When I discussed with Apple, that was not brought up by the Apple salesperson. I was very specific with why I wanted the phone due to the e-sim and traveling. Service providers, mine being Verizon, are generally totally clueless and of little value to ask for any accurate technical/operational information. When I mentioned to both Apple and Verizon where I was going, neither said, "oh well e-sim is not supported in France" but rather agreeing about how nice a feature it is to have. The nano-sim works just fine, but not being able to receive/send texts or wifi calls to the US makes the e-sim totally worthless for me in France. I might as well have a burner
