apple watch battery draining after update

Ever since I downloaded the new update on my Apple Watch the battery is draining fast. I took it to the Apple Store they sent it away. I got it back today and it’s still doing the same thing. I literally turned everything off, rebooted and set it up as a new watch and I still have the same problem. Does anyone else have this problem?

Apple Watch Series 4, watchOS 5

The same thing happened to me. Series 4. A month or so after I got 5.2, my battery started draining super quickly. After normal use, I used to get 60% or so leftover battery at the end of the day. After the drain started, it drained and turned off on its own by 7-8pm.

I took it to the store, they of course ran 2 minute diagnostic and they said the physical hardware is fine. They gave me the standard battery saving "tips", even though my usage patterns did not change before and after the issue started.

I tried a complete wipe and reset as new, didn't help. I wiped again and did not install any third party apps, I turned off background refresh, I kept it in airplane mode, I did not set up cellular, nothing helped. I upgraded to 5.2.1 when it came out, same deal.

I took it to the store again, they ran the same diagnostic, the person assisting me said "I see something in the background is draining your battery". The person assisting me gave me the same stale tips about apps and background refresh. I insisted that those did not help me, and then they shipped it off to the repair center. Less than 24 hours after they got it, they sent it back to the store with "couldn't replicate issue". I assume they ran the same superficial diagnostic instead of wearing it for a couple of hours to see the battery drop dead in front of their eyes.

I'm about to go pick it up from the store today, and I am not happy at all with how it was handled.

I have a Apple Watch Series 3, software 6.0.1(17R604)

Have this exact same battery issue after updating my iPhone X to iOS 13.1.3 today.

I have switched background app refresh completely off, restarted 3 times, tried airplane mode which didn't help.

On average it loses 1% every 5-10 minutes from just sitting idle.

It went from 100% to 39% in under 5 hours, no exercise, not even excessive movement as I work in an office.

Have reported this to Apple Support online, ran a diagnostic and they said my battery life is fine. Told me to wait a couple of days for the watch to settle which makes absolutely no sense.

This is definitely a software issue as it appeared right after I applied the latest iOS update.

Guess what...the iOS update I got yesterday for my iPhone XS (13.1.3) seems to have TOTALLY sorted out my Watch problems. It seems the problem may have been the iOS update and NOT the WatchOS update (5.3.2 as 6 is not available yet for Gen 2 watches).

That would certainly ring true as, like you starrcreature, my XS was running hot a lot for no apparent reason. Whatever it was doing drained the phone battery faster BUT was MOST DEVASTATING on my Gen 2 Watch battery!

It's been a week of having a barely usable watch...but now calmness has returned, it seems. After a full charge 5 hours ago, my watch is now sitting at 92% charge...just like normal. WHEW! What a RELIEF!

I hope this proves true for you too, starrcreature :-)

I thought it helped too! I updated my phone on Friday when the update came out and noticed my phone didn't randomly overheat anymore and my watch was fine allllll day.

Until yesterday (Saturday)... My phone started overheating and battery drain was a tiny bit faster than normal (but nothing too heinous) and my watch was fine.

Then today (Sunday) my watch was mostly fine in the morning with me running around working. At about 1pm I noticed it was at a whopping 33%. Got home at 5pm from work and charged it (20% to 77% by 6.30pm). Went out for dinner and at 8.30pm it dropped below 10% and asked to be put in power reserve! I thought ugh ok sure thing. Less than an hour later in POWER RESERVE it died. So yeah. Life is certainly great for me. I'm gonna try take watch screenshots every hour tomorrow to track the battery drain because again, it's so inconsistent for me!

I am having the same issue after I ran the update last week. My watch never died and would have at least 30% left when I would go to bed no matter how much I used it for workouts or music. Now it dies by 6:30pm since I ran the update. I have read everything online and have stripped it down to bare minimum and turned off all background apps and nothing has fixed it. It is 100% an issue from the last update.

Since update of iPhone X to iOS 13.1.3 and S2 Watch on Watch OS 5.3.2 watch dead after 7 hours without much use. As I am not allowed to wear it or have my phone at work, left both in locker for 8hrs in airplane mode. Eight hours later phone 96% and watch 94%. One hour later after normal wear phone 85% and watch 80% phone was also charged for 20 minutes in car on way home. It must be software related and something to do with them looking constantly for a connection.

I've noticed the watch battery drain happens when my phone overheats. However I have NO IDEA what causes my phone to overheat as it happens sporadically.

My watch battery didn't start draining till about 6.30pm today when I picked up my phone and noticed it was hot to the touch. I glanced at my watch and sure enough it was down to 43% when before this whole problem occurred I should be at 50+% at around that time of the day. 15 mins later it drained a further 7% then at about 7.20pm on the bus my watch alerted me I'd reached 10% battery and asked to go into power reserve and then 10 mins later I arrived home to find my battery at 6% when I threw it on my charger.

There's definitely a connection between phone overheating and watch battery drain but unfortunately I as a consumer cannot piece it together and I wouldn't be able to solve it myself anyway which is frustrating to say the least. It's 100% a bug that first appeared following iOS13 and still has not been resolved for absolutely everybody in 13.1.3...

Might actually wipe my phone utterly and completely and restore it and hopefully it helps?

Same symptoms over here. XS overheating on occasions, AWS2 significantly reduced battery life. Used to have 45-55% battery left at bedtime, now hitting power reserve shortly after lunch time after full nights charge.

I have noticed some odd behaviour with my music app as if it’s freezing up every now and then often with overheated phone to follow. Not sure if it’s the music app causing some issues....

I’ve tried re-pairing the AW as new watch and temporarily solved the problem. Issue returned the very next day.

At a loss, just sitting around hoping for Apple to roll out another update with hopefully a fix.

So...tested out this morning if running the music app has anything to do with my issues, since it has cause some visible problems on my XS. I've resisted playing any music at all but otherwise used the AW as usual and so far its looking very promising.

I'm now 5hrs in and still on 100% battery after a full nights charge.

I'll check in later for a further update.

My wife's watch did the same (battery drained rapidly) after update to 5.3.2. It was lasting all day plus more before updating. I've reset it twice, unpaired twice, to no avail.

I've just checked Bluetooth settings. Phone says watch is connected.

Bluetooth setting on Watch shows:

"Devices

Searching...

Health Device

Searching..."

It's as if the watch is constantly looking to connect to the phone.

I have a series 2 watch, before the last apple ios update last week my watch batter life went from 10pm till at least 7pm the next day with at least 60min of exercise. Now it lasts for about 6hrs, I wore it to bed at 10pm last night fully charged and it woke me at 2am with 10%! So annoyed I would not have updated my watch and phone if I had know this would happen and now it takes at least 6hrs to reach 100% battery on charge!

Oct 27, 2019 3:49 AM in response to figgehedberg

So today I tried something different. No streaming or Bluetooth, used CarPlay with maps and about 45min of tracked activity.

13hrs since full charge and I’m at 70%..!

Tomorrow I’m back at work and will run it again as per usual playing music paired with AirPods, streaming podcasts, activity tracking and CarPlay....we will see how this pans out.
