Memory required for 10,000 photos.

Hi, want to buy Macbook Air 13” but not sure how much memory I need for 10,000 or so photos. Do I need 128, 256 or 512SSD please? Thanks, K.

Photos were taken on various iphones over the years & on digital cameras of average (i.e., inexpensive) quality.

I suppose I've done the same thing. A very rough estimate based upon what I have would be about 35 GB for 10,000 photos. As you can see that's not very much, but there is a lot more to consider when evaluating just how much storage you might need over the life of your MacBook Air.

Obviously larger is better. Many people buy MBAs with only 128 GB. Soon they're running out of space and come to this site asking what to do about it. It's not a lot of room. When that happens I refer them to How to free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support.

If photos are your biggest concern though, 256 GB should be plenty.

Sorry! Soon as I posted I realised that I needed to give more info. I have iCloud storage so not an issue. I want to be able to store on harddrive as well as Cloud. My current laptop (refurbished Toshiba) has led to the loss of 7,000 family photos - tech guy said that they’re irretrievable & that computer is wrecked. The photos left are thumbnails, I think, or Index files. Anyway, they were also being stored on the Cloud by the photo app Picasa 3 but are also irretrievable there. I recently (& too late) discovered that Picasa is defunct & I think that photos were meant to be migrated to Google but mine are not there. Fortunately I have all photos on data sticks. So yes, I will upload to Cloud. All my devices are apple (iPhone, tv, ipad etc) & have been for years & now I want to finally integrate everything & buy a Mac. Photos are from iphones and digital cameras. Hope I’ve given enough info. K.

Ok. I’m not a techie so can’t tell you the resolution of the photos but I would say minimal bc most can’t be enlarged without significant decline in resolution. Photos were taken on various iphones over the years & on digital cameras of average (i.e., inexpensive) quality. Simply family snaps so not professional. Does that help? Can I check anything on laptop to answer your question better? What would you consider a reasonable amount of storage? K.
