New iPhone XR - device gets hot

Just purchased the iPhone XR less than 2 weeks ago. When using the MAPS app for 15 minutes or less the device gets hot, not just warm hot. This occurred with my OLD iPhone 6 as well. I thought purchasing a new phone with a new battery, I would not be encountering the same issue.

Any insight?

iPhone XR, iOS 12

If you are using cellular data for Maps, then how hard the processor works has to do with the strength of your cellular signal. The weaker the signal, the harder the processor has to work, and the warmer it gets. Do you have a case on the phone? The processor dissipates heat through the phone case, and if you have another case on the phone, it can prevent that from efficiently dissipating that heat. However, if you believe the heat to be excessive, you can make a Genius Bar appointment at the nearest Apple store and have the device examined by Apple.
