Passcode changed, unknowingly!

For the first time last night I kept my iPhone XS in the same pocket as my leather wallet (wallet touching the screen). I did this because my shorts does have back pockets, which is normally where I keep my wallet.

I was shocked to see the “iPhone locked for 55 mins” when I pulled it out to use. I since unlocked it, after waiting, using FaceID so no big deal.

Today, I noticed that my passcode for the phone is no longer valid. Somehow the phone has managed to invalidate or changed my old passcode without me ever entering the old one. I assume the wallet has interacted some way with the screen to have caused this. Right now I’m afraid to power down my phone as this needs passcode to get back in, so what are my options for getting/setting a new passcode again? Has anyone else experienced this?
