Why is a song's iCloud status: Matched?

In iTunes v.12.8.2.3, a song in my library that I have edited is in the AIFF format but in Song Info/File/iCloud status I see "Matched"? Shouldn't it be "Uploaded"? Thank you.

See About iCloud Music Library icons and status - Apple Support. iTunes will always attempt to match a track in your library against those in the store first, only uploading your copy if it fails to find a match.

Thank you but I thought that any songs that don't match to the iTunes catalog will be uploaded to iCloud in their original form. So if this song was indeed "Matched" I would not expect it to remain in AIFF format.

The songs matched or uploaded from the source library remain unchanged in it unless you were to choose to remove the local copy (e.g. right-click > remove download) and then download the cloud version.

OK, thank you. I think I get it now. The way I read your answer is that this song's title (and perhaps artist) was indeed matched to a song in the iTunes Catalog but since the song in my Library is in the AIFF format it has been left unchanged.

Yes the copy in your library remains unchanged. Matching should be done on the basis of an audio fingerprint, but there is scope for mismatching clean and explicit versions of the same song.
