Battery problem?

I have been using my macbook pro 13 Inch, Mid 2012 for a while now and it never had any problems.

However, when my 60W magsafe charger burned, I decided to get a new one off of ebay.

After using it, I experienced some problems. The charger would continue to charge but turn off again or it would not charge all together. When the computer finally booted the charger immediatly stopped charging. When it stopped, it would immediatly start to beep. Then the magsafe charger always kept turning off and on.

Then when I charged it again, the light that indicated the computer is on kept on turning off and on and when I took off the baseplate on the bottom, the fan kept stuttering.

When it did hit the home screen, it was stuck as the green led and did not charge. I then noticed that the charger looked like counterfeit. It did not have any signification of the manufacturer or any signs it was made by apple. It did not have the apple logo either.

The computer itself it slow, especially at the start up screen after I cleaned everything inside numerous times.

Could these symptoms be because of the charger or the battery? Do I need the battery replaced, the magsafe port, or something inside the computer?

EDIT: I even tried resetting the SMC too with no success. I dont have the tools to remove the battery also.

Thank You

-Ryan

Welcome Ryan,

We would be guessing without some data on your battery's condition, available from System Information. You can find System Information (SI) in the folder path Macintosh Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities, or by doing "About this Mac.. from your Apple menu and clicking the "System Report" button in the resulting window.

When that utility opens, look in the left-hand pane that lists contents and select "Power." The main pane will show power data. The part we need to evaluate your battery is outlined in this screenshot:

Copy that info from your computer and paste it here

The good news is 2012 13-inch MacBook Pro 9,2 is not yet classed as "vintage" so a battery and charger should be available from Apple. If you think counterfeit power supplies are common, wait until you shop for batteries. Avoid auction sites.

The charger is here: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC461LL/A/apple-60w-magsafe-power-adapter-for-macbook-and-13-inch-macbook-pro?fnode=8b

Apple won't sell a battery for you to install at home but will install one in the store for you. Remember: if your specific computer is the Mid 2012 non-Retina 13-inch model, it is still supported with parts and service and, based on Apple's published criteria for support, with be until Oct 2021.

I didn't know what you meant by "Copy that info and paste it here" but im assuming I have to post it here.

Here is what I found: Charge Information:

  Charge Remaining (mAh): 1296

  Fully Charged: No

  Charging: No

  Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5251

  Health Information:

  Cycle Count: 1427

  Condition: Normal

  Battery Installed: Yes

  Amperage (mA): -1644

  Voltage (mV): 11110

So, what needs to replaced? The battery or the counterfeit magsafe charger? And how much would a battery replacement cost.

Also, thank you for your assistance.

That's is the needed information. Perfect

Apple states that batteries should retain up to 80 percent "health" at 1000 cycles. The " Condition: Normal" in your report means your "health" is between 80 and 100 percent. At over 1400 cycles your battery is doing amazingly well. Still, without a third-party utility we don't know if "health" is 90 percent or 80 percent and if the battery will say "replace soon" before the week is out.

If the runtime is still decent, those numbers lead me to suspect the charger. As that now seems the bigger issue, there is more data in that System Information report about the charger; it is just below the section I highlighted in my screenshot. It may be useful if we had that too.

Apple battery pricing for in-store service in the US is here and includes parts and labor as I understand (none us work for Apple--we're volunteers):

mac Repair - Official Apple Support

Should be US$129

Hopefully the bogus charger did not damage the battery. I would report the seller to eBay for selling counterfeit parts. Apple never licensed the MagSafe connector to outside parties so any non-Apple charger is a counterfeit. You can report it to Apple here:

Apple - Legal - Counterfeit Questions

If you want to see "health" get the free utility Coconut Battery ONLY from its developer's site here:

https://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/

Other than that it wont add much to what we already know about you battery.
