Section of keyboard inop after updating to ios12

I am setting up an iPhone X and iOS 12 update was required. After the update was complete the far left keys on the keyboard will not work (they worked when I started the process because I needed these keys to enter the Apple ID password). Q W A S Z shift and 123 will not work. I’ve tried numerous times to restart the phone with no success. Any advice?
