cannot connect my macbook pro to the network

I have a mid2015 MacBook Pro running 10.14.3 and an iMac late 2014 running 10.14.5 (I haven't got round to running the system upgrade). I have them both plugged in to the router. On the MacBook I can access the iMac using go/connect to server. However, on the iMac, although the MacBook shows up in Go/connect to server.browse, the connection always fails.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Both machines are connected to the network through Wi-Fi and Ethernet. On the MacBook, a Finder window lists the iMac as an available resource.

I would choose one method or the other your machine.

You can connect your Mac to:

  • Mac computers that have file sharing turned on
  • Windows computers with shared folders
  • AirPort disks and Time Capsules
  • Servers on your network that use Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) over TCP/IP
  • SMB/CIFS, NFS, FTP, and WebDAV services running on UNIX, Linux, and Windows servers
  • FTP servers
  • With read-only access, you can copy files from the server, but to copy files to the server, you may need another FTP app. Choose Apple menu  > App Store to find FTP apps available for macOS.
  • Open App Store for me
