Want to use my protonmail for Apple ID, but it gives the “email address is not available” error

I do not have my protonmail email account associated with my current Apple ID so I’m not sure why I’m getting this error. Furthermore, I’ve received no emails from apple to my protonmail email address. I do have the protonmail app on my iPhone and iPad, but does that count as “associated”?

No. The only connection my protonmail account has with my apple devices is the protonmail app; it is not a “reachable at” listed email and it is not, insofar as I know, associated with any Apple ID I’m aware of.


Razmee did link the instructions on switching to a third party email and it seems I’ll need to sign out of all my devices before making the switch.


I wanted to use a new @icloud.com address, but I keep getting a “There was a problem turning on Mail, try again” every time I try to enable it.
