iphone won't accept last pin digit

I can find some posts on the internet here and there about this issue but it doesn't seem to be that widespread and thus it hasn't been fixed. It's pretty annoying though.

Basically, when face ID fails and you're prompted to enter your passcode, your iphone literally won't let you enter in the last digit... This happens randomly, and not often, but when it does, it's annoying... The simple work around is to hit cancel, and then try again.

What's interesting is that it doesn't freeze... Say for instance you have a 4 digit pin... I can enter in the first three digits, but no matter what I hit at that point, it just won't take a 4 digit... I can hit backspace and go all the way back, and then enter in another 3 digits, but again, it just won't take the 4 digit.

This leads me to believe that somehow there is a counter to determine how many digits to take, and that counter somehow gets bumped up by 1... so as you get to the 3rd digit, you've hit the max counter of 4 (assuming you have a 4 digit pin) and so the phone just doesn't let you hit anything else at that point.. And obviously a 3 digit entry isn't valid so you're basically stuck.

Try Some Troubleshooting?

  1. Restart:  Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears. Also, see Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.
  2. Reset:  Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds). Also, see iPhone, iPad, iPod touch- Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting.
  3. Restore:  Connect your iPhone to iTunes on your computer, backup, and then select Restore to Factory. Also, see Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings and If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple.

For help with the above on later models, including iPhone 7, 7s, 8 or later, iPad Pro 11" and iPad Pro 12.9" models, please refer to If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen.

If all else fails then make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. If you did not purchase it from Apple then you will need to look to the vendor for service or How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Distributor (AAD).
