Updating to High Sierra 10.13.6 from Sierra makes it forget monitor display settings

So I made the jump to HS and it created issues. First notable problem: on my dual display using LG 4K displays (used fine before) upon restart it forgets the settings for ONE display and doesn't even allow me many options to change it. Yet monitor 2 has all the options, appears normal and is fine. Monitors are connected with Displayport cables to Thunderbolt ports. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM only fixes it for one restart cycle. I can always unplug and replug that ONE monitor cable and THAT fixes it. LAME. But I did find a working solution:

  • Go to the Finder (click on desktop) and then hover over the "Go" menu at the top of your computer screen
  • Now press the "option" button while still hovering over "Go" and you will see the "Library" folder choice appear
  • Choose "Library" by highlighting it.
  • With the Library folder open in front of you, locate the "Caches" folder.
  • Now drag the whole CACHES folder it to the trash.
  • Empty the trash.
  • Restart.

This actually fixed the monitor issue.

I had to struggle with Repairing my PHOTOS app. It kept getting stuck at 35% updating and then would crash. (sigh)

Still using a purchased version of Word 2011 for Mac (WHY spend for updated when I'm sure it all does the same stupid word processor job?) Had to download Microsoft Office for Mac 14.7.7 update package now to make it stable. That worked.

I haven't even touched FCPX or it's app friends yet. The whole reason I'm trying the update --from a OS that was working just fine.

I hope this helps someone out there with the same problems. I scour the internet for solutions and always hope to find from 1 page of google results!

OK - update with SOLUTION.

So I still have a Time Machine backup from Sierra so I was ready to do a fresh install of High Sierra. Found a way to get the HS full install file (UNGHHH) and made a USB install drive. Erased the hard drive, did a new install. Upon first startup the monitor resolution problem persisted. I unplugged/replugged the thunderbolt-to-displayPort cable and it fixed. Not surprising as this worked before as a fix, but who wants to do THAT every time you start up?

I then tested it with MULTIPLE restarts, shutdown, start ups. BOOM. Fixed.

So now I just have to manually put all my files back - just time consuming but worth it to have everything running as normal.

To add on, while the computer is basically empty I'm gonna update to Mojave and see how it runs.

(All this was really just for Final Cut Pro X updates)
