trouble loading gmail account info into app

I downloaded the gmail app - it appears on my iphone screen. I got a notification on the app to open up the app & input a number it assigned to me - but it keeps sending me back to the google sign in screen. There is nowhere to answer "yes" & input the number as I was instructed. Help!!!
