Macbook Pro mid 2012 running Mojave can't seem to erase Samsung or Crucial SSDs

So I'm trying to update my old MBP to an SSD and while the SSDs are in fact compatible, I can't seem to erase them to format them to my device. The SSDs all say the same thing in Disk Utility:

Partition Map = Not Supported

When I try to run First Aid, it seems to work, though very quickly. When I try to run Erase, I get the following error message in the details:

Couldn't open the device.

Operation failed.

It does this with both the Samsung SSD and the Crucial SSD that I've tried. Anybody know how I can fix this so I can upgrade my computer?

Is there a physical write protect switch on the SSD?

If there is no physical write protect switch sometimes it takes several attempts before success.

I am following the directions.

The entire message I get from the detailed portion of the erase function is this:

Erasing "Samsung SSD 860 PRO 1TB Media"(disk5) and creating "MacOSXSSD"

Unmounting disk
Creating the partition map
Couldn't open device.

Operation failed...

It displays the same message no matter what I do, with both SSDs I've tried.
