I'm trying to update iTunes, and I repeatedly get the error message:

installing this SW again."

I have tried a munual install, and even tried to uninstall entirely. Always get a message that banother insall is taking place.

Anyone seen this issue?

Hi there jelliott03,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. I understand you’re having issues installing iTunes on your Windows PC due to an alert about another program being installed. I’ll be happy to help with this.

Have you tried restarting your computer yet? If not, give that a go and make sure all Microsoft Windows updates have been installed as well. Take a look at how to do these steps and more in the following link:

If you can't install or update iTunes for Windows

Go through all those steps and let me know if that resolves the issue for you.

Best wishes.

Reboot. Try again.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment. Links to the most recent builds are now at the bottom of the page.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If you've installed iTunes in Windows 10 from the Microsoft Store the first uninstall that from its tile in the start menu. Then follow the removal steps as given, repairing and removing components if they will remove, otherwise physically removing the named folders. See the notes below the second box. In particular the Microsoft Fix It tool there may clean up the "another app is installing" message.

The rumours of the death of iTunes have been somewhat exaggerated. iTunes is staying exactly the same except for those who install the next version of macOS 10.15 Catalina where the functions will be split between three new apps and Finder, the Mac equivalent to Windows Explorer.

tt2,

Your Troubleshooting guide was an invaluable guide; complete and understandable. Because of it, my problem has been solved.

I was not able to uninstall some Apple programs and folders, so I began deleting all Apple files I could (the shotgun method), and was left with two files not uninstallable:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services\ShellStreams.resources\en.lproj

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services\ShellStream64.dll

Magically, I was then able to uninstall and delete everthing. The reinstalled iTunes(64) (newest release) and iCloud. Everything seems fine. Problem solved!

Again, thank you for the great help.

Hmmm... I managed to uninstall iTunes and iTunes Download Manager, but cannot uninstall Quicktime, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple App Support (32 or 64), Bonjour, or iCloud. Same message: another app is installing.

No .msi info/error message, so don't know what to look for in the registry. Very cautious about blundering around there. I suspect a registry issue, tho.

My next step may be reinstalling iTunes; but without understanding the underlying issue, I'm flying blind. What do you think?

Maybe I should just wait & see, since iTunes is no more. I've saved my iTunes data files to a backup.
