I’d like to make edits in the picture stream in the timeline while not changing the sound stream. How do I lock the sound stream so it can’t be effected by cuts in the picture.

If I understand correctly, it sounds as if you need to use the Clip>Detach Audio function.
I can’t, Tom. in the timeline the picture clips are displayed horizontally above the sound clips at the bottom of the screen.
I would like to cut picture without affecting the sound cuts. So I want to isolate the sound, detach the sound, from the
picture. I used to know how to do this in fcp X, but I’ve forgotten. Thanks.
Could you post a screenshot of your timeline so you can see where the audio and video are?

It should be active if a clip with audio is selected in the timeline. I must be misunderstanding the situation.
